My 10-year old son Ethan and I, just after a 20k ride we did together.
I am a 40 year old father of 4. I enjoy getting out on my bike and enter the odd sportive and time trial. For years, I have been using the Sufferfest workouts to help maintain my fitness. I often found that after longer rides, I would suffer from back pain, which would keep me off the bike and stop me from doing what I love.
When the yoga videos first came onto the app I would do the odd one here and there, but never really considered constantly adding them to any of my training or daily routines. At the start of last October I saw on Facebook people were setting the challenge of 30 consecutive days of yoga and I thought I might as well give it a go.
Quite early on in the challenge, I started to notice I was feeling more comfortable on the bike and less tired. Just before the end of the challenge I had a 60 mile hilly ride planned up on Dartmoor. I have done this ride a few times in the past and had always come away with the dreaded back pain, so I was a little concerned that I would have to be off the bike for a bit afterwards. Not only did I come away this time with a PB, but to my surprise I was completely pain free.
When the challenge finished, not only was I feeling a lot more comfortable on the bike and coming away from longer rides without any pain, I also found myself feeling calmer and more relaxed. I thought to myself, this yoga is really helping me here, so why stop at 30 days. Let's see how long I can keep this up. I am still going!
I have now been doing yoga videos consecutively for 214 days. I even took my mat on holiday with me so I could keep it up. I'm sure it is even carrying over into my work life as I do find myself getting a lot less stressed.
My kids join me for the odd session. My eldest daughter is currently doing her exams and was getting very stressed. I have encouraged her to do some yoga with me here and there and it is really helping.
A few of my friends have mentioned the odd niggle they get here and there and the first thing I say is “you want to give yoga a go” and I really believe everybody should. It has definitely helped me carry on doing what I love and now I find myself looking forward to my daily yoga routine.
Pro tip: I plan most of my sessions for the evening just after I get home from work and find it really helpful to wind down and relax.
